Pottery workshops in Almaty for children
UNESCO Almaty Cluster Office organized a гончарные мастер-классы for children in the Aral Sea region, Kazakhstan, under the UN Joint Programme for 2014-2016. The aim of the workshop was to introduce children to the history of pottery, its techniques, as well as to teach them to make pottery in traditional methods.
The workshop was held on September 13-20, 2009. During the visit, Phil Epp, an American artist based in Almaty, participated in master classes. The classes were held in the Kulanshi Modern Art Centre, which is located in the Palace of Peace and Harmony.
The workshop was organized by UNESCO Almaty Cluster Office in conjunction with the International Fund for Saving the Aral Sea in Kazakhstan. It was meant to be a three-hour seminar, but the workshop continued into the evening.
The workshop was attended by 125 children from all over the country. The children were instructed in simple production operations, such as glazing and firing. They were also taught to make trinkets, small sculptures, and pots. They were also able to take home a ceramic piece painted by themselves.
Master classes are held daily for adults and children. They teach techniques of clay, glazing, firing, and hand building. In advanced adult classes, the focus may be on refining techniques, porcelain, sculpture, and hand building.
